Rules and Ordinances

Effective June 1, 2024

The mission of Fairview Cemetery is to honor and maintain the historic grounds while providing a picturesque setting for the loved ones and visitors. We strive to provide long-term maintenance and perpetual care to those who reside here. The Galion Cemetery Association requests the following rules and regulations be observed to maintain the tradition of Fairview Cemetery.

Floral/Tree/Shrub Tributes

  • Flower beds may be planted only on the grave side of the monument. Beds are not to exceed the length of the monument or extend beyond six inches from the face of the monument. Floral beds will not be permitted in the center of a lot.
  • Plantings are to be limited to small annuals such as geraniums or other upright plants. Crocus, tulips, and hyacinths may be planted in the flower beds in the fall. No hardy plants such as peonies, rose bushes, day lilies, irises, or chrysanthemums will be permitted on regular lots. These are permitted on estate lots. If these flowers are not maintained, the cemetery officials have the right to remove them. Further, damage to live flowers may occur during routine mowing/trimming operations by cemetery personnel.
  • Planting of a tree or trees at various locations in the cemetery in memory of a loved one are permitted only with the approval of the cemetery management. Approved lot plantings of shrubbery or bushes become the sole responsibility of the lot owner for upkeep and only after prior approval from the cemetery management for planting of said shrubbery.
  • If a flower bed is not desired, one planted pot or urn will be permitted so long as these are attached to the monument or footer and off the ground so as not to impede mowing or trimming. This is not applicable to Section 16.
  • One shepherd’s crook, three to five feet in height, will be permitted but must be centered and touching the back of the memorial/footer.

Other Tributes

  • Veteran markers/flag holders are always allowed in all sections. These should be within three inches of the sides or grave side of the monument footer.
  • Wreaths which are part of the floral offering at the time of interment will be permitted for a period of no more than one week following the service date. Grave blankets, evergreen arrangements, and wreaths will be permitted November 2nd through March 31st.
  • One saddle will be permitted per monument per season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter). This is not applicable to Section 16.
  • Artificial flowers are allowed only in vases on memorials, in arrangements on shepherd’s crooks, or placed on monuments by way of a saddle. The saddle is not applicable to Section 16.
  • Statues are not permitted unless affixed off the ground to the monument or footer. This is not applicable to Section 16.
  • Remembrance lights (solar lights) will be permitted centered and touching the footer on the graveside of the monument and limited to only one per grave. These will be permitted only in the non-mowing season November 2nd through March 31st. Those noted outside this period, or improperly placed, may be immediately removed, and disposed of by the cemetery staff.
  • Glass, ceramic statues, loose stone, toys, sport memorabilia, bird houses/feeders, wind chimes, and other items may be displayed so long as they are permanently affixed to the monument/footer and off the ground. This is not applicable to Section 16.
  • Any kind of landscape edging is not permitted. Mulch, to include bark, rubber, and stone or stone chip, is only acceptable within the six-inch flower bed and within three inches around the side and rear of the monument/footer.
